GALLIPOLI

Gallipoli wet by the Ionio sea, rise on the west coast of the Salentina's peninsula, in the Gulf of Taranto. Characteristic is the division of the town in two defined zones: the "old town" and the "new suburb".

The suggestive historical center of the town, rich of ancient buildings and frescos, rise on an calcareous island joined to the mainland by a brickwork bridge. Around the 1500, the surround boundary are builded to face the enemy attacks, resized in height, around the end of 800, up to the actual panoramic way that, surrounding the island, allow to enjoy the amazing scenario (about the ancient walls remain one only fragment, today in good state yet).

Looking at north we can see a part of the Neretina's coast, looking at south we can see the bay formed by the Pizzo's promontory. Near the coast, on the west side, we meet the "Scoglio dei Piccioni", the Campo's islet and in some clearly days we can see the profiles of the Sila's mounts, while at south-west appears clearly the Sant'Andrea island, with his lighthouse, developed in the year 1866.

Crossing the bridge, we can meet immediately the last rampart of the ancient past, la greco-roman fountuain, the more ancient in Italy. We enter in the "new suburb" where the skyscraper, situated to the begin of Corso Roma (neuralgic way that divides the town in two parts called "scirocco" and "tramontana"), inaugurates the crossing to the modernity. The modern buildings have replaced the palaces of the 800-900. The complex appears completely opposite to the "old town", a lot of stores and tourist structures are ready to receive 200.000 presences in the summer months.

Surely Gallipoli, in the last decades, has known a notable housebuilding expansion and today it can be considered one of the blooming town of the Salento besides aspired turist destination, but it has lose not his suggestive position gived mainly by his charming landscapes and these photos say all themself.
